Biceps Tendonitis and Instability
Biceps tendonitis and instability are two conditions that can affect the biceps tendon, which is a tendon that connects the biceps muscle to the shoulder and elbow. Biceps tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon, while biceps instability is a condition in which the tendon is loose and can move out of place.
The biceps tendon is a strong tendon that helps to flex the elbow and supinate the forearm (turn the palm up). It is also involved in shoulder movements, such as reaching overhead.
Biceps tendonitis can be caused by overuse, repetitive movements, or trauma. It is most common in people who participate in sports that involve overhead movements, such as baseball, tennis, and swimming.
Biceps instability can be caused by a tear in the tendon, a dislocation of the shoulder, or overuse. It is more common in people who have had previous shoulder injuries.
The symptoms of biceps tendonitis and instability can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Common symptoms include:
- Pain in the front of the shoulder or elbow
- Tenderness over the biceps tendon
- Swelling in the area
- Weakness in the arm
- A popping or clicking sensation in the shoulder or elbow
The diagnosis of biceps tendonitis and instability is made by a doctor based on your medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or MRI.
The treatment for biceps tendonitis and instability depends on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may be treated with rest, ice, and over-the-counter pain medication. More severe cases may require physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, or surgery.
Physical therapy can help to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder and elbow and improve range of motion. Corticosteroid injections can help to reduce inflammation and pain. Surgery is only used in severe cases when other treatments have not been successful.
The prognosis for biceps tendonitis and instability is usually good. Most people make a full recovery with time and treatment.
