Quadriceps Contusion (cork thigh)

A quadriceps contusion, also known as a cork thigh, is an injury to the quadriceps muscle, which is located in the front of the thigh. It is caused by a direct blow to the muscle, such as a fall or a collision with another player.

The symptoms of a quadriceps contusion include:

  • Pain in the front of the thigh
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Weakness in the quadriceps muscle

If you think you have a quadriceps contusion, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

The treatment for a quadriceps contusion includes:

  • Rest: Avoid activities that aggravate the pain.
  • Ice: Apply ice to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
  • Compression: Wear a compression sleeve or wrap around the affected area.
  • Elevation: Keep the affected leg elevated above the heart when you are resting.
  • Pain medication: Over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help to relieve pain and inflammation.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help to improve range of motion and strength in the quadriceps muscle.

In most cases, a quadriceps contusion will heal on its own within a few weeks. However, if the pain is severe or does not improve with treatment, surgery may be an option.

Here are some tips to help prevent quadriceps contusions:

  • Warm up properly before exercising.
  • Stretch your quadriceps muscles regularly.
  • Wear protective gear, such as a padded knee brace, when playing sports.
  • Avoid contact sports if you are at risk for injury.
