Following recent changes to Victorian healthcare regulations, appropriately trained General Practitioners can now independently assess, diagnose and initiate treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), without necessarily requiring an assessment by a psychiatrist.
Dr Michelle Zhang has completed the additional ADHD training recognised by the Victorian Department of Health. Bookings will open from mid-November 2026.
Our aim is to make comprehensive, high-quality ADHD care more accessible to adults in Ringwood and Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
What does an ADHD assessment involve?
An adult ADHD assessment process involves a structured evaluation of your symptoms, medical and developmental history and how these affect your everyday life.
The assessment typically involves three appointments.
Appointment 1 – Comprehensive ADHD Assessment
Consultation fee: $845
Your first appointment involves a detailed clinical assessment, including:
- Discussion of your current symptoms and concerns
- Review of your medical and mental health history
- Exploration of childhood symptoms and developmental history
- Assessment of how symptoms affect your work, study, relationships and daily life
- Review of ADHD questionnaires completed before your appointment
- Consideration of other conditions that may contribute to your symptoms
You will be asked to complete ADHD questionnaires before attending, including information from a family member or another person who knows you well, where appropriate.
Dr Zhang will review the information gathered to determine whether your symptoms are consistent with ADHD.
Appointment 2 – Assessment Results and Treatment Planning
Long consultation fee: $195
A second appointment is required to discuss the findings of your assessment.
During this appointment, Dr Zhang will:
- Explain the assessment results
- Discuss whether diagnostic criteria for ADHD have been met
- Provide information and education about ADHD, where diagnosed
- Explore treatment and management options
- Discuss medication, including potential benefits and side effects, where appropriate
- Develop an individualised management plan
If ADHD is diagnosed, medication may be commenced at this appointment if clinically appropriate.
If ADHD is not diagnosed, Dr Zhang will explain the findings and recommend further assessment or alternative management where needed.
Appointment 3 – Treatment and Medication Review
Standard consultation fees apply
For patients commencing medication, a follow-up appointment will generally be arranged approximately four weeks later.
This appointment allows Dr Zhang to:
- Review your response to treatment
- Assess effectiveness and any side effects
- Monitor relevant health measurements
- Adjust medication dosage where appropriate
- Arrange ongoing prescriptions and follow-up care
Some patients may require additional appointments to optimise their treatment.
Once treatment is stable, ongoing reviews are generally arranged every five to six months, depending on individual clinical needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect a person’s attention, organisation, impulse control and ability to manage everyday activities.
Although often recognised during childhood, ADHD can persist into adulthood or remain undiagnosed for many years.
Common symptoms of adult ADHD include:
- Difficulty maintaining attention or concentrating on tasks
- Forgetfulness and frequently misplacing things
- Difficulty organising tasks, managing time or meeting deadlines
- Procrastination and difficulty completing projects
- Restlessness or feeling constantly on the go
- Impulsivity or difficulty regulating emotions
- Difficulties affecting work, study, relationships or daily responsibilities
Experiencing some of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have ADHD. Other medical, psychological and lifestyle factors can cause similar difficulties, making a comprehensive assessment important.

Medication is one possible treatment for ADHD, but it is not appropriate or necessary for everyone.
If ADHD is diagnosed, Dr Zhang will discuss treatment options and consider medication based on your symptoms, medical history, preferences and clinical circumstances.
Medication prescriptions are not guaranteed following an assessment.
Yes. ADHD treatment requires ongoing monitoring to ensure that management remains effective and appropriate.
Patients commencing medication will generally be reviewed after approximately four weeks, with further appointments as needed.
Once treatment is stable, reviews are generally arranged every five to six months, depending on individual needs.
In suitable circumstances, patients with an established diagnosis and stable treatment may have ongoing medication prescribed by their regular GP, provided the relevant Victorian prescribing requirements are met and an appropriate ADHD treatment instruction has been issued.
Our initial service will focus on adult ADHD assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
