Minor Skin Surgery & Procedures
Warrandyte Road Clinic is equipped to perform a wide range of minor skin operations right here in our dedicated treatment room, often saving you the need for a referral to a specialist or a hospital waiting list.
Some of the doctors are experienced in skin cancer medicine and minor soft tissue surgery, ensuring you receive safe, high-quality care in a familiar environment.
Skin Cancer Management
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Early detection and treatment are vital.
- Skin Checks: some of the doctors can provide comprehensive skin checks to identify suspicious moles or lesions.
- Biopsy: If a lesion looks suspicious, your doctor can perform a biopsy (taking a small sample) to determine exactly what it is.
- Excision: For confirmed skin cancers (such as Basal Cell Carcinomas, Squamous Cell Carcinomas and Melanomas), we can often perform a curative excision on-site, removing the cancer with a safety margin to ensure clear edges.
Removal of “Lumps and Bumps”
Many patients have benign (non-cancerous) lumps that can be uncomfortable, easily irritated, or cosmetically concerning. We commonly remove:
- Cysts: Sebaceous or epidermoid cysts are sacs under the skin that can become swollen or infected. We can surgically remove the entire sac to prevent it from coming back.
- Lipomas: These are soft, fatty lumps that grow under the skin. While usually harmless, they can become large or tender. We can remove these through a small incision.
- Skin Tags & Warts: Removal of other minor skin lesions using excision or cryotherapy (freezing).
What to Expect
1. Initial Consultation
Before any procedure, you will need a standard appointment with your GP. They will assess the lesion, explain the procedure, discuss the potential costs involved and plan the most appropriate treatment.
2. The Procedure
Procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. This means the area is numbed so you won’t feel pain, but you will remain awake. Most minor surgeries take between 20 to 30 minutes. You can usually drive yourself home afterwards, though we recommend taking it easy for the rest of the day.
3. Pathology & Results
Any tissue removed is sent to a pathology laboratory for microscopic examination. This confirms the diagnosis and ensures that the lesion has been completely removed. Your doctor will discuss these results with you at a follow-up appointment.
4. Aftercare
Our nursing team will apply a dressing and provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your wound at home. If you have stitches (sutures), we will book a brief appointment for their removal, typically 7 to 14 days later.
